Jan 1 to 31 - Los Angeles

1969 - January 01

Lecture BG 03.31-43 - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"This whole material atmosphere is surcharged with three modes of material nature. So one has to transcend the modes of material nature. Just like one should not try to become a first-class prisoner. In the prison house, if one is a third-class prisoner and one is first-class prisoner, the third-class prisoner should not aspire that 'Let me remain in this prison house and become a first-class prisoner'. That is not good. One should transcend the prison walls, or come out of the prison house. That is his aim."

Letter to Krishna dasa written from Los Angeles

1969 - January 02

Lecture Purport to Sri-Sri-Gurv-astakam - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"We should always remember that the spiritual master is in the disciplic succession. The original spiritual master is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He blesses His next disciple, just like Brahmā. Brahmā blesses his next disciple, just like Nārada. Nārada blesses his next disciple, just like Vyāsa. Vyāsa blesses his next disciple, Mādhvācārya. Similarly, the blessing is coming. Just like royal succession—the throne is inherited by disciplic or hereditary succession—similarly, this power from the Supreme Personality of Godhead has to receive. Nobody can preach, nobody can become a spiritual master, without obtaining power from the right source."
690102 - Lecture Purport to Sri-Sri-Gurv-astakam - Los Angeles

1969 - January 03

Lecture BG 04.01-6 - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"Devotee means he is firmly convinced about his relationship with God. And what is that relationship? That relationship is on the basis of love. The devotee loves God, and God loves devotee. This is the only relationship. That's all. God is after devotee, and devotee after God. This is relationship. So one has to establish this relationship. Just like Arjuna is in relationship with Kṛṣṇa as a friend, similarly, you can be in relationship with God as a lover. You can be in relationship with God as master and servant. You can be in relationship with God as father and son. There are so many relationships. As we have got relationship within this material world, this is only perverted reflection of that five relationship with God. But we have forgotten that. This Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is to revive that consciousness. It is nothing new. It is just to bring an insane man to the normal condition of life. To forget God means that is abnormal condition, and to have relationship with God is normal condition."

Letter to Hansadutta written from Los Angeles

1969 - January 04

Lecture Purport to Parama Koruna - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"Actually, when Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu passed through the forest of Jhārigrāma, the tigers, the elephants, the snake, the deer, all joined Him in chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. It is so nice. Anyone can join. Animals can join, what to speak of human being? Of course, it is not possible for ordinary man to enthuse animals to chant, but Caitanya Mahāprabhu did it actually. So even if we cannot enthuse animals, we can enthuse at least human being to this path of Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra chanting."
690104 - Lecture Purport to Parama Koruna - Los Angeles
Letter to Upendra written from Los Angeles

1969 - January 06

Lecture BG 04.07-10 - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"Whenever and wherever there is decline in religious practice..." What is that religion practice? That religion practice is whenever there is decline of love of God. That's all. When people becomes lover of mammon, matter, that means decline of religion. And when people increase love of Godhead, that means real religion. So Kṛṣṇa comes, or Kṛṣṇa's servant or representative comes, to adjust things. When people forget love of Godhead, somebody, either Kṛṣṇa, God Himself or His representative comes to adjust things. So this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is incarnation. They are teaching love of Godhead. We are not teaching some ritualistic process, that "You become Hindu," "You become Christian," "You become Muhammadan." We are simply teaching, "You try to love God."

Lecture Purport to Gaurangera Duti Pada - Los Angeles
Letter to Upendra written from Los Angeles

1969 - January 07

Lecture Purport to Bhajahu Re Mana - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"In the Bhagavad-gītā it is said that if you have your mind controlled, then your mind is the best friend. But if your mind is uncontrolled, then he is your greatest enemy. So we are seeking after friend or enemy, both of them are sitting with me. If we can utilize the friendship of the mind, then we are elevated to the highest perfectional stage. But if we create mind as my enemy, then my path to hell is clear"
690107 - Lecture Purport to Bhajahu Re Mana - Los Angeles

1969 - January 08

Lecture BG 04.11-18 - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"So Bhāgavata says that either you are a person desiring unlimitedly or you have become free from all desires, or you are desiring liberation from this material conditional life, you please try to become Kṛṣṇa conscious. Your desires, whatever desires you may have, that will be fulfilled. That will be fulfilled. So this is referred. Akāmaḥ sarva-kāmo vā. So whatever desires you may have, if you become Kṛṣṇa conscious then your that desire will be fulfilled."
690108 - Lecture BG 04.11-18 - Los Angeles
Lecture Purport to the Mangalacarana Prayers - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"Vande 'ham means 'I am offering my respectful obeisances'. Vande. V-a-n-d-e. Vande means 'offering my respectful obeisances'. Aham. Aham means 'I'. Vande 'ham śrī-gurūn: all the gurus, or spiritual masters. The offering of respect direct to the spiritual master means offering respects to all the previous ācāryas. Gurūn means plural number. All the ācāryas. They are not different from one another. Because they are coming in the disciplic succession from the original spiritual master and they have no different views, therefore, although they are many, they are one. Vande 'ham śrī-gurūn śrī-yuta-pada-kamalam. Śrī-yuta means 'with all glories, with all opulence'. Pada-kamala: 'lotus feet'. Offering of respect to the superior begins from the feet, and blessing begins from the head. That is the system. The disciple offers his respect by touching the lotus feet of the spiritual master, and the spiritual master blesses the disciple by touching his head."
690108 - Bhajan and Purport to the Mangalacarana Prayers - Los Angeles

1969 - January 09

Lecture BG 04.19-25 - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"Outsider they will say, "What is this Kṛṣṇa consciousness? They are living in the nice house and they are eating very nicely, dancing, singing. What is the difference? We also do that. We go to the club and eat very nicely and dance also. What is the difference?" There is the difference. What is that difference? The one milk preparation causes disorder, another milk preparation cures. This is practical. Another milk preparation cures you. If you go on dancing in the club and eating in the club gradually you become diseased materially. And the same dancing and same eating here you become spiritually advanced. Nothing has to be stopped. Simply it has to be changed by the direction of an expert physician. That's all. The expert physician gives you yogurt mixed with some medicine. Actually medicine is just to bluff the patient. Actually the yogurt will act. So similarly we have to do everything but because it is mixed up with that medicine of Kṛṣṇa consciousness it will cure your material disease. That is the process."
690109 - Lecture BG 04.19-25 - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"This is Kṛṣṇa consciousness, to understand everything belongs to Kṛṣṇa. If one acts in that way that everything... Īśāvāsyam idaṁ sarvam (ISO 1). The Īśopaniṣad says, 'Everything belongs to God', but God has given me chance to handle these things. Therefore my knowledge and intelligence will be there if I utilize for serving God. That is my intelligence. As soon as I utilize them for my sense gratification, then I am entrapped. The same example can be given: if the bank cashier thinks, 'Oh, so many millions of dollars at my disposal. Let me something and put in my pocket', then he is entrapped. Otherwise, you enjoy. You get good salary. You get good comforts and do your work nicely for Kṛṣṇa. That is Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Everything should be considered as Kṛṣṇa's. Not a farthing mine. That is Kṛṣṇa conscious."
690109 - Lecture BG 04.19-25 - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"These foolish persons who are thinking that 'I shall merge into the brahma-jyotir', they are less intelligent, because they cannot exist there. He has got inclination, desires. There is no facility for fulfilling your desires unless you go to Kṛṣṇa. Therefore in order to fulfill the desires he'll come again to this material world. Because he wants activities, pleasure. Ānanda-mayo 'bhyāsāt (Vedānta-sūtra 1.1.12). The spirit soul and the Supreme Lord is by nature joyful. Whenever there is question of joyfulness there must be varieties. So there is no variety. So without variety he cannot remain there for very long. He has to come. But because he has no information of the spiritual varieties, he is bound to come back to this material variety. That's all."
690109 - Lecture BG 04.19-25 - Los Angeles
Lecture Purport to Gauranga Bolite Habe - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"So God is so merciful that even some persons cannot understand Him... First thing is people cannot understand actually what is God, but God comes Himself to explain Himself. Still, they commit mistake. Therefore Kṛṣṇa comes as a devotee to teach us about Kṛṣṇa consciousness. So we have to follow the footprints of Lord Caitanya. And Narottama dāsa Ṭhākura teaches that "First of all, try to chant the name of Gaurasundara."
śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya prabhu-nityānanda
śrī-advaita gadādhara śrīvāsAdi-gaura-bhakta-vṛnda

In this way, when we are a little bit attached with Gaurasundara, Lord Caitanya, then we automatically feel transcendental emotion. And that emotional stage is exhibited by shivering in the body. We should not, however, imitate such shivering to show to the public that "I have become a great devotee," but we should execute devotional service nicely and faithfully; then that stage will come automatically, shivering."

Lecture Initiation - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"If by chanting you see that your love for Kṛṣṇa is increasing and your love for matter and material enjoyment is decreasing, then you must know that you are progressing. If, by the result of chanting, you are increasing your material hankering, that is not progress. Then that is an offense. One should know that "Now I am chanting with offense. I have to rectify it." You have to test whether you are increasing your love of God, Kṛṣṇa. Then you should know that you are in progress."
690110 - Initiation and Wedding - Los Angeles
Lecture Purport to Gaura Pahu - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"So actually, every one of us, neglecting our spiritual emanicipation, we are engaged in material sense gratification, and therefore we are losing the opportunity of this human form of body to elevate myself on the spiritual platform. This human body is especially given to the conditioned soul to take a chance for spiritual emancipation. So anyone who does not care for spiritual emancipation, he is inviting spiritual death. Spiritual death means to forget oneself that he's spirit. That is spiritual death."

Letter to Hansadutta written from Los Angeles
Letter to Mrs. Levine written from Los Angeles

1969 - January 11

Lecture BG 04.31 - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"This human form of life is to know the laws of the Lord—scientifically, the laws of the Lord. Study, just like we have given so many examples. Why you should encroach upon other properties? Everyone has got right to live. Why should you kill other animals? These are transgressing the laws of nature. You have to suffer. So you have to know these things, because you have this nice body. Not that you simply dress yourself very nicely, you become nice. No. You must know the laws of God. Then you are nice. Yes. But people are taking much interest for dressing nicely, and within heart, less than animal. This kind of civilization is condemned civilization. And this Hare Kṛṣṇa chanting is cleaning, cleansing, inside and outside. Therefore in order to come to your real standard of life, you must take to this movement. Ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam (CC Antya 20.12, Śikṣāṣṭaka 1). Cleansing the heart."
690111 - Lecture BG 04.31 - Los Angeles
Lecture Purport to Sri Krsna Caitanya Prabhu - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"When Kṛṣṇa was personally present, He simply asked us to surrender, but He did not distribute Himself so easily. He made condition that, "First of all you surrender.” But here, in this incarnation, Lord Caitanya, although He's Kṛṣṇa Himself, He makes no condition. He simply distributes, "take love of Kṛṣṇa."

Lecture BG 04.34-39 - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"Our sinful life means ignorance, due to ignorance. Just like if I touch this flame, it will burn. Somebody may say, "Oh, you are burned. You are sinful." This is common sense. "You are burned. You are sinful, therefore you are burned." That is, one sense, it is right. "I am sinful" means I do not know that if I touch this flame, I will be burned. This ignorance is my sin. Sinful life means the life of ignorance. Therefore, in this thirty-fourth verse, "Just try to learn the truth. Don't remain ignorant. Just try to learn the truth by approaching a spiritual master." Why should you remain in ignorance if there is way and means? That is my foolishness. Therefore I am suffering."

Lecture Excerpt - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"Śrīmad-Bhāgavata says that "Nobody should desire to become a father, nobody should desire to become a mother, unless one is able to save the child from the impending death." So that is also the duty of spiritual master. One should not become a spiritual master unless one is able to save the disciple from impending death. So what is that impending death? Impending death means... Because we are spirit soul, we have no death. But impending death means of this body. So it is the duty of spiritual master, it is the duty of the parents, it is the duty of the state, it is the duty of kinsmen, friends, everyone, to save people from this impending birth and death."

"Sarva-dharmān parityajya mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja (BG 18.66): "You give up all other engagement. Simply surrender unto Me." That is knowledge. So one who has attained this knowledge... Now, this is the beginning. This is the stepping stone in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, that simply..., one who is firmly convinced that "Simply by executing the duties in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, my all other functions will be nicely done.""

Lecture - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"The spontaneous love... The example is given: just like a young man, young girl, without any acquaintance, when they see each other, there is some loving propensity. That is called spontaneous. Not that one has to learn how to love. Simply very sight will invoke some loving propensity. That is called spontaneous. When we are advanced in the matter of loving God, so much so that as soon as you see or remember anything about God, immediately you become ecstatic, that is spontaneous. Just like Lord Caitanya, when He entered the temple of Jagannātha, as soon as He saw Jagannātha, immediately fainted: "Here is My Lord.""

Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"One should give up sense enjoyment. Of course, in this materialistic life we have got our senses and we are practiced to use them. We cannot stop it. But there is no question of stopping, but regulating it. Just like we want to eat. Viṣaya means eating, sleeping, mating and defending. So these things are not forbidden altogether, but they're adjusted just to make it favorable for executing my Kṛṣṇa consciousness. So we should not take... Just like eating. We should not eat just to satisfy the taste. We should eat only just to keep ourself fit for executing Kṛṣṇa consciousness. So eating is not stopped, but it is regulated favorably. Similarly, mating. Mating is also not stopped. But the regulative principle is that you should marry and you should have sex life only for begetting children Kṛṣṇa conscious. Otherwise don't do it."

"So our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is to give people chance to take advantage of this Vedic literature. There is a very nice verse in Caitanya-caritāmṛta:
anādi bahir-mukha jīva kṛṣṇa bhuli gelā
ataeva kṛṣṇa veda purāṇa karilā
(CC Madhya 20.117)

We do not know when we have forgotten God, when we have missed our relationship with God. We are eternally related with God. We are still related. Our relationship is not lost. Just like the father and the son, the relationship cannot be lost, but when the son becomes crazy or mad, he thinks that he has no father. That is a conditional... But actually the relationship is not lost. When he comes to the consciousness, 'Oh, I am the son of such-and-such gentleman', the relationship is immediately there. Similarly, our consciousness, this material consciousness, is a condition of craziness. We have forgotten God. We are declaring God is dead. Actually I am dead. I am thinking, 'God is dead'."

Lecture SB 05.05.01 - Los Angeles
Nectar Drops from Srila Prabhupada
"First of all, what is the conception of God? Conception of God is "God is great. Nobody is greater than Him, and nobody is equal to Him." That is God. Asama-ūrdhva. The exact Sanskrit word is asama-ūrdhva. Asama means "not equal." Nobody can be equal to God. This is analyzed by great ācāryas. They have analyzed the characteristics of God. They have characterized the characteristic are sixty-four. And out of that sixty-four, we have, we living entities, we have got fifty only. And that is also in very minute quantity. Fifty qualities of God we have got, but that is very..., in minute quantity."

"So sleeping… Eating, sleeping, mating—sex intercourse. The same enjoyment as the pigeon is enjoying, you are also enjoying. And defending—they are defending by their wings; you are defending by atomic bomb. So there is no difference of quality of life. So Kṛṣṇa, when says “Stop work,” means stop working like animals, but not to stop working like Kṛṣṇa conscious people are doing—not to stop chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. Stop you animalistic life and begin your spiritual life. That is the purpose."
