A materialist person performs all pious activities or devotional activities for some material gain, and as soon as there is any hindrance in the path of material gain, they at once become a demon. Therefore bhakti means without any material desires. When one has no motive to satisfy his or her material desires by devotional service. That is the sign of a pure devotee.

Srila Prabhupada's books, lectures, conversations and letters offer a comprehensive presentation of this essential subject as seen in the Vaniquotes Material Gains category. An introduction from his books is given below in the following 8 quotes.
