Devotees in the Gaudiya Vaisnava Sampradaya are also known as Rupanugas because they follow in the footsteps of this great acarya. Rupa Gosvami was one of Lord Caitanya's principle disciples and he, along with his brother Sanatana Gosvami, are responsible for spreading Lord Caitanya's teachings far and wide.

While there are only eight verses directly written by Caitanya Mahaprabhu (the Sri Siksastakam), the six Gosvamis are responsible for bringing his teachings to the world by writing many books showing spiritual seekers the way back to Godhead by the process of bhakti. Rupa Gosvami is actually Rupa-manjari in the spiritual world, a very dear servant of Srimati Radharani, therefore, Narottama dasa Thakura said that in order to understand the glorious pastimes of Sri Sri Radha and Krsna we must serve the divine lotus feet of Srila Rupa Gosvami with all eagerness and sincerity in order to receive his mercy.
