'''Badrinarayan:''' Prabhupada asked for questions, and a professor from Cal Tech stood up and said, “You are talking about kirtan, but this is sentimental.” He rambled on, quoting verses from Vedanta Sutra. Prabhupada didn’t even look at the professor. He was looking at Lord Jagannath, chanting on his japa beads, and seemed like a lion getting ready to pounce. The professor stopped speaking. Prabhupada said, “Are you finished?” Then Prabhupada quoted the Puranas, the Upanisads, and other scriptures and hammered away at this professor. The professor had been standing proudly, but he became a little deflated, then he was on his knees, and then he sat down. Prabhupada finished in a crescendo, made his last point, and said, “Do you have any question?” The professor said, “Can we have kirtan?”
Once Prabhupada was looking at a newspaper someone had given him. On the front page was hype about the moon shot, “One small step for man, one giant step for mankind.” Prabhupada looked at that cursorily and then went to the fifth or sixth page where there was a small article that said, “Taxes are going up to pay for the moon shot.” Prabhupada said, “This is their real business.” He saw the moon expedition as just a ploy to milk the people.

'''Badrinarayana:''' It was the Family Dog Auditorium. I think it used to be the Shrine Auditorium, it was the Family Dog Auditorium. Bhavananda had gotten a bunch of barbecue grills and filled them with briquettes and bags and bags of frankincense incense, so the whole place was just billowing with frankincense incense. But I remember that a bunch of the Hell’s Angels followed us. They got their fighting spirit out of them, and they followed the carts. So when we got to the Family Dog Auditorium…Prabhupada came on the stage a little bit later, we were all inside the auditorium. When Prabhupada came in, all the devotees bowed down; and there was something so magnanimous and also heavy about Prabhupada’s presence that so many other people bowed down. It’s not an unusual occurrence that people would just instinctively bow down, that here’s a saintly person. I remember that it was a wood floor and when they bowed down, there was a couple of Hell’s Angels next to me and their chains and billy clubs and everything fell out and hit the floor; and I was thinking how when all the Lord Brahmas all bowed before Krishna, all their helmets. So was thinking that Prabhupada in Kali-yuga, even the Hell’s Angels with all their billy clubs and helmets and everything. And Prabhupada started the lecture…it was the most amazing thing because they were hippies and college students from UC Berkeley and San Jose State, and then there were these Hell’s Angels and there were Black Panthers, it was just such a montage. And Prabhupada started off his lecture by saying, “My dear frustrated youth of America…”

'''Badrinarayana:''' Prabhupada was fixed in his preaching mission, and that was his ecstasy. But every now and then his internal emotions would bubble up sometimes. So usually Prabhupada would come and offer his obeisances to the three altars, and then he would come and sit on the vyasasana. Then we would offer obeisances and we would still be in the process of bowing down, and he’d be sitting on the vyasasana and he would begin with the Sanskrit, om purnam adah purnam idam, the Sanskrit rolling out. And nothing came, there’s nothing coming. So we all looked up and Prabhupada was sitting and he was looking at the Deities and tears were just pouring down his eyes, he couldn’t speak, just tears pouring down his eyes. It was the most far-out thing because then he pulled himself up straight, he took a deep breath, and you could tell he just suppressed, physically he just pushed it down and went on with his business. It was like daruka, it was a disturbance to his service. But there was no question that Prabhupada was on the highest level. But he was so dedicated to his spiritual master, he would not let his personal ecstasy interrupt his service to his Guru Maharaja. Then one time Prabhupada was leaving. The vyasasana was in the back and there was a side door, and Prabhupada had his slippers right there. So Prabhupada went out, and he had his back to us and he was just slipping on his slippers. I think somebody was helping him slip them on. He turned to us and we were just sitting there with our mouths open, nobody moving, and Prabhupada said, “Yes, if I told you everything, you would faint,” and then he walked up to his room.
Prabhupada used to come in from the back of the temple room because his quarters were upstairs and there was a hall he came down. We didn’t have the big Rukmini-Dwarkadish then, we only had small Radha-Krishna. Prabhupada came in, and from the back of the temple room he looked and he called Silavati over…Silavati was the pujari…and he said, “There’s tilak in Krishna’s eye.” She went and she looked and she couldn’t see anything, and she came back to Prabhupada. Prabhupada said, “No, there’s tilak in Krishna’s eye.” And she looked and she looked and she looked, and right in the very…it was a tiny speck of tilak in Krishna’s eye.

'''Badrinarayana:''' There were some sankirtan devotees who were bathing in a stream they thought was on our property, and it was some other guy’s property; and they were arrested in their kaupins or gamchas and taken to jail, and they spent the night in jail. They went before the judge the next day, and the judge took one look at them and said, “Why have you arrested them? These are Swami’s men!” and immediately let them go. I remember that same judge came to see Srila Prabhupada. And even though he was a judge, he was in overalls or blue jeans or whatever it was, he was very casually dressed, and boots. He came right up and he dropped right on Prabhupada’s lap a big grocery bag. Prabhupada looked into the bag and looked up, and it was vegetables from the garden. The man had brought Prabhupada a sack of tomatoes and squash, and Prabhupada said, “This is love when someone brings you something from their garden.” And the man was completely charmed by Prabhupada.

'''Badrinarayana:''' Prabhupada was teaching us the Sri Isopanisad in the mornings. We could barely do anything, at least certainly myself. The Sanskrit was just a blur, at least to us, and Prabhupada was teaching us the Sanskrit. He would offer his obeisances before the three altars; and when he would sit down, we would all bow down. Then we would come up and we would chant the mantras. Only Jayatirtha really was learning them and a couple other devotees, and after maybe a week of this he could tell we weren’t taking it seriously. Prabhupada said, “I am writing these books for you. You have to know these books.” He said, “If someone stops and asks you, ‘Can you read this, the Sanskrit?’ and you say, ‘No, no, I’m not reading, I’m just selling,’” Prabhupada said, “What is that? I am writing these books for you,” and he was just pleading with us. So then we took it very seriously after that to learn the Sanskrit.

Prabhupada Memories
Interview 01
Badrinarayana: When Prabhupada walked through the gorgeous building in Detroit, in the front lobby there was a painting of naked women bathing, and all the sannyasis were trying to be proper about things. Prabhupada looked at the painting, turned to them and said, “Very nicely done.” Then they came to a big polar bear rug that had the polar bear’s head and teeth. Srila Prabhupada looked at it, gingerly put the tip of his cane in its mouth, lifted it up, looked at the teeth, and, wide-eyed like a child, turned to Jagadish Maharaj and asked, “They eat men?” Jagadish Maharaj said, “Sometimes, Srila Prabhupada.” Prabhupada put it down and made a wide berth to walk around it. It was sublime. The man was asking close to a million dollars for the building. Prabhupada said, “Every room is worth a million dollars. Krishna engaged a rich person to build this building for us, and it’s simply been waiting for us to pick it up.” Prabhupada walked through the whole thing as if he could pull the money out of his bead bag. Price wasn’t an issue when Prabhupada was talking about this and that, but actually he had no money for this project. Outside there was a sunken garden, and Prabhupada and the man, who was very greedy, were peacefully sitting in the sun in the grotto area. Srila Prabhupada loved the building, and in his sublime, aristocratic way, Prabhupada said, “This building is perfect for our purposes. Every room is exquisite. It’s exactly what we want. It’s a very aristocratic building.” The man could taste the money. Prabhupada said to him, “But we are not aristocrats, we are professional beggars. Therefore, you should give it to us.” I thought the man was going to have a cardiac arrest. Prabhupada toyed with him back and forth, and ultimately Prabhupada got the building. Ambarish gave half the money and Lekhasravanti gave the other half of the money. In this way, although Prabhupada had nothing but his desire, Krishna arranged the building, and Prabhupada picked it up. No one could believe the price that Prabhupada got it for. In fact, after the papers were signed, a neighbor called to say that the man was stripping the building. He was taking the mirrors off the walls, the doorknobs, the light fixtures, because everything was very opulent. We stopped him and said, “How can you do this?” He said, “I can’t help it. Your swami cheated me.” Later on we told Prabhupada the story and Prabhupada said, “Yes, I am a Calcutta boy.” That man met his match in Srila Prabhupada.
