Karnamrita das Remembers Srila Prabhupada
Prabhupada Memories
Interview 01
Karnamrita: In 1971 the Berkeley temple was on Durant Street. Srila Prabhupada sat down on his vyasasan and he started chanting the Samsara prayers. We all chanted along with him, and when Prabhupada got to the third prayer, which is, “The spiritual master engages the disciples in the service of the Lord,” he just started crying. I was kind of dumbfounded. I didn’t know what to think at all, but it was just so powerful. I am not used to people emoting that kind of bhava and emotion, but I realized his tears came because of the love he felt for his disciples. The tears were coming as he was looking around the room at all of us who were there eager to be with our spiritual master. We were just like kids basically, babies, from my perspective now. That was a very small experience, but it was very powerful for me to see. It’s not just the externals that are important; it’s the feeling that we have for the process, for Krishna and for our guru that is really important. That’s what I gleaned from that. |

Karnamrita: At the time I was a new devotee, had been a devotee about four months. Of course, I had been hearing Prabhupada’s lectures and reading his books and listening to some of the recordings, and there was a lot of anticipation about Rathayatra in general. But the airport, when we went to the airport to greet him, there were so many devotees there and we were having this huge kirtan waiting for Prabhupada to come.
