Prabhupada Memories

Interview 01

Adi Purusa: It was 1975 during the Gaura Purnima Festival when Madhudvisa had invited all the sankirtan devotees up to see Srila Prabhupada. Madhudvisa Swami finally got to me and said, “This is Adi Purusa. He distributes your books, Srila Prabhupada. Srila Prabhupada immediately began to chant govindam adi-purusam tam aham bhajami [BS. 5.52]. When I first got initiated, I didn’t like my name because someone said that it was a difficult name to have, so I became mental about my name. I was thinking all about my name when I was in the room, and then Prabhupada chanted my name. Immediately I felt my name was wonderful. I was very happy after that, and I didn’t have any more mental anxiety about my name. One devotee said, “Oh, why did Prabhupada give you so much attention?” I said, “I don’t know—because Prabhupada is Prabhupada?” I realized he knows everything and he knew that I didn’t like my name, so he chanted govindam adi-purusam to encourage me.

Prabhupada’s quality of humility and his quality of kindness and his merciful smiles stand out for me. I don’t think there is one quality that you could say stands out above any other quality. Prabhupada was perfect.
