Interview 01

Annada: I bought Srila Prabhupada a chaddar and I don’t know why, but for some reason I didn’t want him to know that it had come from the Khadigram at the Ashoka Hotel. So I took all the tags off and put it in a brown paper bag so there was no indication of where it had come from. I put the package on his desk and offered my obeisances. As I was getting up, Srila Prabhupada said, “This is from Ashoka Hotel?” To this day I understand that if it is Krishna’s desire, Prabhupada can know everything, everywhere, at all times. Prabhupada’s vision can be supernatural. One tends to forget that.

Annada: There was an incident with Siddhaswarupa in Mayapur, and the devotees were reporting to Prabhupada about something that had happened. So Srila Prabhupada said words to the effect that “I consider that if he has come from so far away to see me, there must be some love there.” And he said, “Krishna’s love is unconditional, that no matter what you do, still I love you.” He said, “His love is like the father’s love for the son. No matter what the son does, the father always loves him.” So Prabhupada was always accepting and always willing to forgive. That was a unique quality about Srila Prabhupada, that he had no animosity or enmity towards anyone at all.

Annada: When Srila Prabhupada gave the lecture on the day of Their installation, he gave the lecture in Hindi so it would have been directed to the local guests. And he was begging forgiveness from all the personalities there for any offenses, and that struck me.

Towards the end of the darshan at the Delhi temple, he sat next to his harmonium and played a few melodies of the Hare Krishna mantra and chanted. And then he pushed the harmonium away and he said, “This is the way to please Krishna, to chant the Hare Krishna mantra in different melodies.” During Srimad-Bhagavatam class, in that lecture he was talking about hogs, dogs, camels and asses; and my parents came to that particular lecture. My father’s response after that was, “What kind of lecture was that? He was just talking about hogs, dogs, camels and asses.” Prabhupada gave us just what we needed to hear, but we’re not always willing to accept. But it was very interesting. He was talking about grihamedhi life and hogs, dogs, camels and asses. No “Radhe, Radhe” or intimate pastimes or anything like that. When you look back now, it’s so much clearer how his preaching was medicinal on the level that we needed to hear these things, and we still need to hear these things. He is giving the right medicine, the right dose at the right time. Not like a quack who will give you something that you like to take but it doesn’t actually do the job.
