*Type or paste the page name in the box and (don't press enter) click blue 'Prepare' button;

*Note the line: 'The page was saved. You can edit it' and click the 'edit' link;

=== Tag placement ===
*Please read about our '''[[Vanimedia:Multi-language Subtitle Project|Multi-language Subtitle Project]]'''.
*Leave the following tag: '''<nowiki><languages/></nowiki>''' at the top of the page;
*Cut the '''<nowiki><translate></nowiki>''' tag (deleting the blank line left behind) and paste it on its own line (create a blank line for it if necessary) at the point you wish the translation to begin;
*Delete any other '''<nowiki></translate> and <translate></nowiki>''' tags including the blank lines left from the deletes (please note next step);
*Do not delete the last '''<nowiki></translate></nowiki>''' tag found at the bottom of the page;
*Preview then save page;

== Marking a Page for Translation ==
*You can also find help for '''[[Help:Translating Pages|Translating Pages]]''' which covers layout guidelines.
*Go to '''Special:PageTranslation''';
*Under 'Pages proposed for translation', choose a page and click (mark for translation);
*Uncheck the first box next to 'Allow translation of page title' as most pages titles will not be translated;
*Go to bottom of the page and click the button 'Mark this version for translation' Do not fill in the other fields;
*The system will update the translatable page source by adding unit markes for each translation unit (paragraph).<br />
Example:
<nowiki><!--T:1--></nowiki>, <nowiki><!--T:2--></nowiki> etc.

=== Unit Markers Added by System ===
*Unit markers define the sections that are or have been translated;
*Markers are always on the line before a unit (paragraph); or, if unit starts with a header then after the first header on the same line for each translation unit.
<nowiki>
<translate>
== Birds == <!--T:1-->
Birds are animals which....

<!--T:2-->
Birds can fly and...
</translate></nowiki>

== Editing a Source Page ==
If a translateable page needs to be edited never add unit markers yourself. After saving, follow the instructions above for [[#Preparing a Page for Translation|'Preparing a Page for Translation']].

=== Deleting whole Units ===
*If you edit the source page and delete whole units, also remove the unit markers.

=== Moving Units ===
*You can move units around without invalidating translations: just move the unit marker together with the rest of the unit.

== Translating ==

=== How to Translate ===
*Go to Special:Translate;<br />
Example:
  http://vanisource.org/wiki/Special:Translate
*Click the name of any message group that has untranslated pages. (Each translatable page is a message group, but there can be other kinds of message groups too);
*Follow translating process and use suggetions that are appropriate. Suggestions are automatically generated from previous translations.

=== Reviewing ===

:Filled (black) check-mark means that you have already marked the translation as reviewed;
:Empty check-mark (white on gray background) means that you will be the first reviewer of the translation;
:Gray check-mark means that the translation has been already reviewed by others, but not by you;
*Consistency in translating words, phrases and concepts aids clarity of suggestions given by translation memory (suggestions);
*The number of people who have reviewed a translation is shown near the review action for each message;
*Users can only review translations they haven't made themselves. Multiple people can review any translation.

== Advanced ==

=== Variables ===
*Syntax is '''<nowiki><tvar|name>contents</></nowiki>'''. For translators these will show up only as $name, and in translation pages will automatically be replaced by the value defined in the translatable page (so they are global "constants" across all its translation pages). Variables can be used to hide untranslatable content in the middle of a translation unit. It also works for things like numbers that need to be updated often. You can update the number in all translations by changing the number in the translatable page source and re-marking the page. You do not need to invalidate translations, because the number is not part of the translation unit pages.<br />
Example:
<nowiki>
<translate>
Income this month <code><tvar|income>{{FORMATNUM:3567800}}</></code> EUR
</translate></nowiki>
