Adikarta das Remembers Srila Prabhupada

Prabhupada Memories

Interview 01

Adikarta: I was in Calcutta in 1975 or ’76, and there was a brahmachari who wanted to get married. He wanted to personally ask Prabhupada and he asked me to go into the room with him. He said, “Srila Prabhupada I want to get married. Is it all right if I get married?” The only thing Prabhupada said was, “Yes. But how will you maintain your wife?” That was all he said. That was instructive because if you’re going to get married you have to figure out how to make some money to maintain the wife.

The qualities that stood out to me the most about Srila Prabhupada was that he wanted to flood the world with Krishna consciousness and that he had unlimited knowledge. He gave you a lot of confidence. He gave you confidence in him because he was so completely sure and certain and he had so much faith that this was absolute knowledge. He had that air that this is the ultimate, that if you follow me, you’ll be okay.

Adikarta: He would sit on the chair in front of the Deities, and the kirtan went on for a long time. I remember Bhagavan, he was leading, but they were singing that tune, Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna. And so Prabhupada was sitting there watching and he was completely happy, it seemed, just listening to the kirtan. To me that was indicative of how important the kirtan is that Prabhupada, even though he was trying to write so many books and do so many things, but he still just sat down for an hour, he would just listen to the kirtan and nod his head. But he was completely happy. Everybody was dancing and he was swaying his head, and he looked very immersed in some kind of deep reverie.
