As living beings we are all originally God conscious, but due to our desires to please our senses we forget our natural state of God consciousness. The desire to make life comfortable and pleasing to us is so prominent in us. By pleasing ourselves we think we will attain happiness, but actually that is an illusion. Happiness in this material life is short, But when we surrender ourselves to pleasing the lord, then then we derive eternal happiness. If we do not work for pleasing God, then that work will entangle us in the cycle of birth and death.
