Saintly persons are the paragons of virtues. They have a positive impact on the people around them, and help them to progress spiritually. Usually, in order to guide those under them, saintly persons are not only expected to be well-versed with scriptures, but also to apply them in their lives and exhibit saintly qualities (in their dealings etc). Just by the association of pure saintly persons, one would be able to ameliorate his consciousness and start taking to devotional service of Lord Krishna.
