Ugra translates to 'rough' or 'unpleasant' and karma translates to 'activities'. Hence, ugra-karma may be defined as unpleasant, pungent and ferocious activities. Examples of such activities are animal-killing, meat-eating and other industrial related work. If one engages in such activities, it becomes hard for him to progress spiritually, the main reason being that spiritualism is the total opposite of materialism (ugra-karma). Hence, if one detaches himself from sense-enjoyment and related activities, one can easily take up spirituality and understand the true goal of life - to go back to God.
